Wachendorfia ( blood root )
SKU: A16
A wonderful hardy plant that brings bees and butterflies to the garden. It spreads by both seeds and rhizomes, and is extremely easy to grow. It tolerates both drought and boggy soils and pond edges once established. Their common name stems from the red sap of the corms, used as a dye, and the bright red-orange colour of the roots themselves.
Germination
Seed is sown in deep (minimum 10 cm) trays in any good seedling mix, and kept permanently moist. Plant in full sun. Extremely drought tolerant once established.
Uses
The rhizome is a distinctive red colour, containing a red fluid rich in arylphenalenone pigments which are used as a dye.
