Tonga spinach / Bele ( Abelmoschus manihot )

Abelmoschus manihot (bele, abika, Tonga spinach, sunset
hibiscus)
A hibiscus relative. The leaves are popular in tropical and
subtropical areas as a leafy vegetable. Plants grow to several
metres tall in warm to hot areas, in cooler locations they are usually
treated as an annual. In NZ, this plant would only be suitable in
sheltered areas of Northland or when grown indoors or in a
greenhouse. The large yellow flowers are very attractive so it has
ornamental value and grows well in a large tub. This plant goes
under many common names depending on the country and is also
grown in many parts of Africa as well as Asia. The plant has a wide
range of medicinal uses, see link for further information.

Traditionally in many SouthEast Asian and Pacific countries bele is used to treat colds, sore throats, stomach aches, diarrhoea, diabetes, and to stimulate bone repair and milk production.
