Sparrmannia africana (African River Hemp)
Sparrmannia africana (African River Hemp)
Not related to hemp but called such because of the strong, fibrous bark. The genus is related to the endemic NZ tree Entelea arborescens (Whau) which has similar flowers, growth habit and fibrous bark. Sparmannia flowers throughout winter and spring and can grow to 3 m in frost-free locations. It tolerates and flowers in shade. It was popular in North Island gardens in the 1950’s and ’60’s but seems to have for the most part disappeared. The 1-2mm diameter seeds are round and germinate in 4-5 weeks at 15-20°C. Seedlings grow quickly once past their first 4 weeks and can be easily transplanted at any time of the year in a frost-free location.
