Fenestraria rhopalophylla   “Babys Toes”
Baby Toes are one of the easier mesemb seeds to grow. They come from the same habitat as several Lithops  species (Living Stones) and flower during the late autumn to early winter. In habitat they are winter growers but in NZ it is best to keep them mostly dry over winter and water them well in summer and autumn. Wait until some of the ‘toes’ wrinkle somewhat before watering. While flowers are generally apricot coloured some may be white, even on the same plants.
The very small seeds germinate (at room temperature) at any time of the year, most seeds come up within 10 days at which time they need high light levels to keep growth from becoming stretched. For the first 12 months they can be kept moist throughout the year. The potting mix should have some lime in it as they prefer slightly alkaline conditions. Potting mix is best covered with a 5 mm thick layer of course sand with the seeds sprinkled on top and then gently watered so they fall between the sand grains.
