Codonopsis lanceolata (A “Bellflower”)

Sometimes called the “Poor Man’s Ginseng”, this tuberous perennial vine from China has carrot-like roots that have a long history of use in traditional medicine and cuisine. Plants are winter-dormant and suitable for pot or tub culture. They are slow growing for the first year but afterwards, if they like the environment, they will twine and flower profusely yet stay manageable on a 1m tall trellis.
