Rhododendron ‘Creme De La Creme’

Rhododendron ‘Creme De La Creme’

SKU: R45
Vireyas come in many sizes, flower colours and shapes. This one was bought as Rhododendron ‘Creme De La Creme’ but that name is unregistered. It appears to be close to Rhododendron gardenia but that species has not been used for hybridisation as far as we know. In any case, it has large leaves (15 x 8 cm) and the immense flowers are highly fragrant and long lasting on the bush as well as when cut. We have no idea if it has selfed or the seeds are hybrids and this is the first time that seeds have been produced.
Germinating fresh vireya seeds is easy but needs to be done in a particular manner. Use 100% sphagnum moss as your base, lightly press into a container and sprinkle the seeds on top. Fit into a zip-lock bag and leave in a bright location for 3 weeks after which you should see germinating seeds. Keeping them growing and transferring them to pots and ultimately into the garden is another matter beyond our knowledge. Let us know how you get on!
