Berkheya purpurea ‘“Zulu Warrior” or “South African Thistle”
Spiny leaves form rosettes to 500 mm diameter and then send up a multi-headed spiny inflorescence up to three feet tall which produces pinkish-purple flowers. These close up at night, and re open in morning. Berkheya is basically a spiny perennial sunflower and is drought tolerant. It is both slug and snail resistant and a handy plant in a place where you want ’stay out’ to be indicated.
Germination
Quick to grow from seeds. Can be sown in late winter or early spring if given some heat, otherwise, germinate in late spring for transplanting out in summer. Plants normally flower for 3-4 months.
